A successful Open House demonstrates what can be achieved by the owner-builder.

Following the annual Ag-Quip agricultural field days in Gunnedah in August, a very successful Open House was held by Ian and Anne Lobsey, who built a Paal kit home on their farm property at Quirindi, south of Tamworth.

Dozens of couples inspected the completed house, with some signalling their firm intentions to go ahead with planning their own Paal kit home.

“The property presented extremely well and people said that they were impressed at what could be achieved by an owner-builder,” commented housing consultant Phillip Longhurst, who had manned Paal’s stand at Ag-Quip.

The Lobseys built a modern-colonial Riverina, selecting a design that was roomy enough to accommodate their two married daughters from Sydney and five grandchildren.

“Our daughters visit together, which means nine extra people. We need a large house,” said Mr Lobsey, who is shire mayor and a retired headmaster.

The couple extended the four-bedroom home to include a double garage and a covered atrium at the rear, also adding french doors and changing the main bedroom.

“These plan alterations were never a problem for Paal.”

People who attended the Lobsey's Open House heard how Ian employed local contractors who had previously constructed a Paal kit home.

“They had found it very good and were happy to build again. They particularly liked the fact that the home kit was complete and they didn’t have to make trips to a hardware store. It was all there,” Mr Lobsey said.

The house enjoys a magnificent position on a ridge with 270 degree panoramic views that take in sunsets as well as other nearby hills.

Interiors are finished in a neutral stone colour, with solid timber flooring in the living areas and carpet in the bedrooms. A wood fire heater is supplemented by reverse-cycle air conditioning.

“The couple found the home building venture to be a satisfying project that went very well for them. Both are delighted with the result, Mr Longhurst said.

Of the many people who inspected the home during the Open House, a number have now made further approaches to Paal.”
